Current treatment for severe obesity includes lifestyle management with changes in diet, exercise and behavior coupled with medication and bariatric surgery. According to the projections in this article a 2 year old with severe obesity has close to an 80 % chance of having severe obesity at age 35, and a 19 year old with severe obesity has an approximately 94% chance of remaining in the severely obese. Given that bariatric surgery in combination with lifestyle management is the most effective treatment of severe obesity, at what age should we be considering bariatric surgery in children?
