As a medical student, and now as a newbie intern, one of the most anxiety-inducing tasks of my day is calling a consult. Even when I have armed myself with all the necessary information and have formulated my consult question, there is always a fear that my request will be poorly received by the person on the other end. This is especially worse overnight, when consulting a physician taking call from home. So too, when the consult request comes not of my own choice, but at the behest of a supervising resident or attending. What are your tips for constructing an appropriate consult request?
