Gluten-free has become a selling point on much food packaging. Yet the growing anxiety to avoid the protein may be misplaced and, in some cases, dangerous. A paper in the BMJ last month pointed out that gluten avoidance by people without celiac disease offers no apparent advantage. The danger, according to the authors, is that “the avoidance of gluten may result in reduced consumption of beneficial whole grains, which may affect cardiovascular risk.” We’ve invited those authors, along with other experts, to exchange their thoughts (and yours) on gluten avoidance and its consequences. We did a brief interview when the BMJ paper appeared. Be sure to listen here: podcasts.jwatch.org/index.php/...
