Rawshani et al demonstrate a significant reduction in cardiovascular complications as well as mortality for patients with both Type 1 and type 2 diabetes over the period 1998 to 2014. The authors report that these trends may be explained by multiple factors including integrated management of patients with chronic disease, patient education and advances in revascularization and glucose control. Improved management of cardiovascular risk factors over time is also mentioned. Are there any other factors at play that were not mentioned in the manuscript? How should we prioritize these factors as we try to continue to reduce CV outcomes for this patient population?
