I am currently a medical student, but realize that it will be almost inevitable for me to eventually make mistakes or omissions that may have negative repercussions for my patients. I realize that institutions probably have different procedures for handling the disclosures of error. However, I would be curious to hear the panelists' perspectives on how to best inform other team members and the patients once you realize an error has been made. I would also be interested in hearing about strategies to handle such situations emotionally as I can imagine that it can be quite devastating when one has unintentionally made an error that may have compromised a patient's safety.
