The prevalence of PE in patients with syncope reported by Prandoni and coworkers is higher than previously published estimates. Differences in study methodology may be responsible for variability in the reported prevalence of PE. Even so, it is noteworthy that Prandoni and coworkers report that all patients in their study were treated according to the 2014 ESC guidelines.
Many of the studies reporting comparatively low estimates of PE prevalence in the context of syncope were published before the 2014 ESC guidelines were available. It is therefore a formal possibility that utilization of the 2014 ESC guidelines was responsible, at least in part, for the difference in reported PE prevalence.
