Fantastic comments. One common theme is the lack of transparency—applicants and advisors have trouble assessing the number of programs to apply to and how they should position themselves after the interview, while residencies struggle to determine who is truly interested in their program. It is no wonder that applying into residency sometimes feels more like a national arms race rather than a rational hiring process!
In the NEJM perspective piece, Drs. Aagard and Abaza imagine a world in which medical schools uniformly report the achievements of their students and residencies clearly outline the characteristics of trainees likely to succeed in their programs. Thinking to your own experiences as an applicant, advisor, or program director, is this necessary and/or sufficient for a more rational and transparent application process? If so, what would it take for this vision to become a reality?
