In 2009-2010, a survey revealed that about a third of North American LGBT medical students stayed closeted during medical school:
About 40% of those remained closeted due to fear of discrimination. I'm not sure what the situation is for practicing health professionals but I image it is similar and some may stay in the closet for similar concerns.

Hopefully increasing acceptance in society will help to alleviate some of these concerns over time, but what can we do now to help?
