Question special

Day 3 Topic: Disclosing a health condition, disability or illness to a school or program

Residency applications (and later, medical license applications) often ask students to answer questions such as, "Have you ever had a mental health condition that may require medication that could prevent you from doing your work as a physician?" and "Do you have any medical conditions which interfere with you ability to competently and safely perform the essential functions of your profession?"

Should medical students be honest and disclose health conditions if they are treated and controlled? What repercussions might students face if they do not disclose their conditions during applications, but need to disclose them to receive later accommodations for disabilities they had at the time of application? What harm to applicants might these questions perpetuate?
