Question special

What tips would you recommend to a busy new resident focusing on wellness and self-care? It can seem paradoxical that residents spend so much time taking care of others but can often feel shortchanged themselves. Any tips and tricks to maximize wellness in the little free time residents often seem to have?

I think that for me three things really paid off dividends:

Exercise: While it may feel like exercising is the last thing you want to do during the first few weeks, I found that I slept better and had more energy when I ensured that I was getting some non-medicine related sweat running.

Cooking: Resist the urge to go down the take-out route. Sometimes, 15 minutes is all you need to have a meal. And frankly cooking can be relaxing.[]

And lastly, plan things to look forward to: A block of nights is way more approachable if you have a weekend hike planned afterward or a planned trip to anticipate. While it can be tough to focus on the longer-term, you'll feel way more hopeful when you have a light at the end of the tunnel.
