First, thank you to our panelists for taking part in this discussion. As many medical students are taught, Dr. Francis Peabody famously noted, “the secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient.” Is compassion or empathy something that can be taught, or did every caring doctor enter medical school with the right attitude and skillset? What are the current best practices for ensuring that trainees graduate medical school as compassionate doctors? Can you share from your own experience about some of the obstacles to becoming a caring doctor?
