Four out of five of the patients diagnosed with mesenteric ischemia were between the ages of 79-83 (Table S4) while Table 1 states mean age 63 +/- 15.5. As these four patients were over a standard deviation greater than the mean age, I wonder if age could have contributed more towards their risk of mesenteric ischemia than the conservative oxygen therapy. One of the risk factors for mesenteric ischemia is advanced age, and mortality is increased in older patients with mesenteric ischemia [KcKinsey et al Surgical Clinics of North America 1997; Aliosmanoglu et al Int Surg 2013].
