The initial stratification process utilized age and PaO2/FiO2 ratio and retrospectively (after the study was performed), the baseline patient population characteristics between the two groups turned out similar. However, why were the baseline patient characteristics not utilized in the initial stratification process because a 45 year old patient could have the similar physiology to a 65 year old depending on their comorbidities? In addition, why were some baseline prognostic characteristics such as SOFA scores on day 1 and need for pressor therapy PRIOR to intubation not included in the initial stratification process as the study seem to allow up to 12 hours post-intubation to determine if patient should be enrolled and into which intervention arm the patient would be enrolled into?
