The emphasis on a single test is what made Step 1 so stressful; however, making it Pass/Fail just shifts that emphasis to Step 2 and increases the weight of problematic subjective measures, which fails to address mechanism, and arguably increases overall stress. A composite score of Step 1, Step 2, and shelf exams would have addressed the root cause of Step 1 stress by distributing the stress across multiple exams, while also providing an incentive to perform well throughout medical school. Since there will always be a need for objective assessment, why aren't alternative methods of objective assessment being considered?
