We've talked a lot about following our passion in medicine. However, this question becomes more complex with more moving parts, for example, by considering passion in research. What do you recommend to students whose passion in research doesn't align well with their favorite specialty? What are the implications of pursuing the preferred medical specialty versus the preferred research (within a less preferred specialty)? Do you know anyone who pursues two separate fields well? Or, is it easier to transfer research skills from a PhD into a new direction better aligned with a preferred clinical specialty?
