Seeking out mentors in medicine can be an intimidating process for students, especially given how busy doctors often are. How do you recommend students approach potential mentors to build a closer relationship in the different phases of medical education, including the preclinical, clinical, and, for students completing additional degrees, graduate phases? In what circumstances would you be most inclined to agree to mentor a medical student? How do you recommend students make requests of mentors, such as for opportunities to meet or for letters of recommendation for residency applications?
