Residents often ask me to describe the goals of resident research. They are curious what types of research to pursue and what role to play within a project. They wonder about the importance of abstracts, oral presentations, attending national conferences, and publications. My perspective is that residents pursuing research to determine if it will be a part of their future career may have different aims than residents with prior experience doing research to advance their skills and demonstrate commitment to research careers. I'd appreciate commentary on any specialty-specific perspectives.
