I am currently on a Heme/Onc rotation and every attending that I have discussed this with thinks that since the overall outcomes of the patients did not change in terms of mortality, it is hard to justify the risks for patients. In the meantime, it is going to be difficult to apply this to the general patient population due to the numerous co-morbid disorders as well as renal insufficiency.
Do the authors think it would be a acceptable approach to discuss the benefit and risk of anticoagulation with patients and start them on AC with what we know now?
