Another reason behind the use of IPC is that it reduces venous stasis by enhancing the hemodynamics of venous blood flow. The CLOTS-3 trial included patients with acute stroke from the UK who were randomized to either receive IPC or not received it. The trial showed that IPC delivering sequential circumferential compression via thigh length sleeves at a frequency determined by the venous refill time reduces the incidence of proximal DVT (ARR 3.6% (95% CI 1.4–5.8). In the PREVENT trial the intervention group used sequential (preferred) and non-sequential methods, knee-length sleeves used was reported to be 79.4% compared to thigh-length 18.7%.
