Question special

Welcome all! I look forward to moderating this important discussion on opportunities in global health during residency. I am currently a resident at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in the Global Health Equity residency program.

Integrating residents into international clinical sites for a short amount of time can be challenging for a number of reasons, and some might even say this can feel like medical tourism. What are the best models for involving residents abroad, and how can they be most helpful while also gaining an important clinical experience? Should the role of residents be more heavily geared toward helping clinically in otherwise burdened health systems, or toward their own personal learning? Perhaps this tension need not be present if both objectives can be seamlessly achieved, but this may not always hold true.
