Mental health issues are common and can go unrecognized in medical patients. Not only can disease lead to mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety but mental illness itself can negatively affect disease treatment and outcomes. As an internal medicine resident, you will need to know the basics about screening and management of mental illness in the outpatient setting, as well as how to manage mental illness and associated medications in the setting of hospitalization for medical illness.
