Xia Bi is currently an internal medicine resident at Scripps Green Hospital in San Diego, California. She completed her undergraduate training at Johns Hopkins University and medical school at Jefferson Medical College. She also has a master's degree in Bioinformatics at the University of Delaware. She is interested in applying translational medicine and personal genomics to the clinical setting.
Dr. Hayek is a physician scientist who, despite being part of a busy clinical fellowship and raising a young family, has authored over 65 manuscripts published in the highest impact, peer-reviewed journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Medicine, JACC Circulation and others. Salim has also received over a dozen awards during his young career including ACC’s Douglas Zipes Young Scientist Award and Emory’s university-wide Outstanding Postdoctoral Achievement Award and has been an invited speaker at several national and international conferences and symposia.
His research interests lie in deciphering the mechanisms underlying the association between kidney and cardiovascular disease, as well as the integration of novel high-throughput technologies such as metabolomics and genomics to implement and improve risk prediction algorithms in clinical practice, with the goal of optimizing patient care and resource allocation. He is a member of ACC's Innovation Advisory Group and Innovation Section Leadership Council, and seeks to create a framework that adopts the basic tenets of evidence-based medicine for the design and evaluation of consumer tech-derived healthcare applications, to ensure maximal benefit to the public, healthcare providers and most importantly patients themselves.
Sanjeev Bhavnani MD is a cardiologist and physician-scientist in healthcare innovation and practice transformation at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation. Dr. Bhavnani was a Qualcomm Wireless Health Scholar where he was involved in the design of next generation digital medicine clinical trials. As a principle investigator on several studies, he has designed trials using nanosensors, wireless mHealth and smartphone-connected devices, handheld ultrasound, lab-on-a-chip technologies and cloud-based data platforms across various patient populations; and to assess the impact of new technologies on healthcare quality, costs, and outcomes. These trials have been executed across the US and in international settings – were he and his team have designed the first smartphone-connected mHealth clinics . To date, these mHealth clinics have enrolled 20,000+ patients. Dr. Bhavnani works with teams of clinicians, researchers, biomedical engineers, translational informatics, and biostatisticians. He serves on the innovation advisory boards of several national medical societies and has worked with digital health think tanks to develop the CONNECT legislation and 21st Century Cures Act. He is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular diseases, nuclear cardiology, echocardiography, and clinical informatics and has been recognized with a Health Catalyst Award and 40-under-40 life science innovators in San Diego.
Vartan Garibyan, DO is a clinical cardiology fellow at the Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, CA. He completed his undergraduate training at UCLA in 2004, then completed 2 years of research in neurodegenerative diseases and channelopathies at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He received his doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine from Touro University Nevada in 2001, followed by internal medicine residency at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego, CA. His research throughout residency with Dr. Bruce Kimura, MD focused on the utilization of hand-held ultrasound and the prognostic implications of ultrasound findings, resulting in several presentations and publications. After completing residency in 2014, Vartan took on a position as Advanced Heart Failure fellow at Scripps Clinic under the directorship of Dr. J Thomas Heywood, MD. In this position, he gained invaluable experience caring for advanced stage heart failure patients requiring mechanical circulatory support (MCS), left ventricular assist devices (LVADs), and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
His major clinical research interests involve further utilization of hand-held ultrasound in heart failure patients and the patient population at large as a diagnostic and prognostic tool.
