My name is Oleksandra Petryna, I'm a Psychiatry PGY2 at Hackensack Meridian Ocean Medical Center, NJ. I was born in Ukraine and came to the US as a teen. I completed my undergrad at Rutgers NJ and medical school at SGU. I did a double major in psychology and biology because I always found psych fascinating, but at the time, I didn't know that I would be going into psychiatry. I came to medical school mostly open to anything. During my 3rd year rotations, which I completed throughout the Hackensack system, I fell in love with psychiatry and realized I found what I would love to do as my career. Something that was always important to me was a good work life balance. I wholeheartedly believe that you can't help anyone else if you're not helping yourself first. Which is especially important in psychiatry as it's a very emotionally demanding path and you must be mentally well yourself before you try to help others. This is true for any specialty in the medical field, as patient interaction and empathy are the integral part of medicine. To that sense, I enjoy traveling with my husband, spending time with family and friends, fostering cats, and reading. I hope to one day split my time between working in the hospital and having my own practice.

Being a healthcare provider will grant me the ability to cure patients using cutting-edge research advances and more importantly provide me the opportunity to care and help patients and their families which ultimately brings me joy and satisfaction. I love to draw, mentor students, or newbies in the biotech field, and spend time with my lovely family and friends.
