Each year, the editors of NEJM Journal Watch General Medicine choose the most important thematic areas in clinical research for the year. We try to strike a balance among relevance to primary care, recognition of landmark studies, and acknowledgment of media publicity and public awareness. Topics can emerge from one important study or from several studies during the year. In 2016, three of the ten topics involved cardiovascular outcomes, and we’d like to begin our discussion with these three areas:
Cardiovascular Outcomes with Newer Antidiabetes Drugs
Does CPAP Prevent Adverse CV Events in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea?
Pulmonary Embolism as a Cause of Syncope
OUR OTHER YEAR IN REVIEW TOPICS FOR 2016:
Focus on Inappropriate Opioid Use Intensifies
Racial Differences Persist in End-of-Life Care
New Sepsis-3 Definitions Await Confirmatory Data
Zika Makes Headlines
With Oxygen, Could Less Be More?
Randomized Comparison of Surgery, Radiotherapy, and Surveillance for Prostate Cancer
And Finally … Rounding Out General Medicine’s 2016 Year in Review
