In 2003, ACGME limited trainees to a maximum of 30 consecutive-hour shifts. In 2001, duty hours were further revised to limit interns to 16 hours of continuous duty. The goal was to improve patient safety at the same time of improve resident education. iCOMPARE (for internal medicine) and the FIRST Trial (for general surgery) are the first controlled trials to evaluate the effectiveness of these new regulations. Have they worked? Or have they not?
