Dr. Alexandra F. Santos, MD, Allergist and Clinical Immunologist, has worked as an MRC Clinical Research Fellow at the Department of Pediatric Allergy, Division of Asthma Allergy and Lung Biology, King's College London and Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, since 2010, following receiving prestigious and competitive awards from the Medical Research Council (MRC): an MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowship and an MRC Centenary Early Career Award.
Dr. Santos has recently been awarded an MRC Clinician Scientist Fellowship which will allow her to continue combining regular clinical activity in Pediatric Allergy with translational research in the laboratory aiming to improve the diagnosis of food allergy and our understanding of the immunological mechanisms underlying allergy and tolerance in sensitized children.
Dr. Santos has also obtained funding from the Immune Tolerance Network/NIAID for her work in the LEAP Study. She was awarded 4 other fellowships prior to joining King's College London, namely from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Portuguese Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology and the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), as well as 3 travel grants and 15 prizes for oral and poster presentations at National and International Congresses, including the Barry Kay Award from the British Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in 2012 and a Poster Prize in the Postgraduate Showcase of the School of Medicine of King’s College London in 2011.
In addition to her clinical and research activities, Dr. Santos has been very active in the EAACI, where she has integrated different working groups and scientific panels, including task-forces to generate international guidelines for patient care in allergic disease.
In June 2013, following 2 years as junior representative in the board of the Paediatric Section of EAACI, Dr. Santos was elected as the leader of the over 3000 Junior Members & Affiliates of this Society and has consequently become a voting member of the EAACI Executive Committee.
Dr. Santos' current main research interests are: food allergy, anaphylaxis and allergy prevention.
