John Kwon is currently a research associate at the Broad Institute. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in Biological Sciences. John has a strong passion for research in cellular biology and oncology. At Notre Dame, he has worked in a cellular biology lab under the mentorship of Dr. Kevin Vaughan. His senior thesis focused on understanding how mitotic proteins contribute to cell cycle regulation and modulation of chromatin structure. Outside of research, John has been involved in mentoring undergraduates and volunteering in the local community. He enjoys teaching and providing guidance for students, as well as learning from his own peers and mentors. His current interest to explore genomics has brought him to the Broad Institute. John is collaborating with an MD/PhD student to genetically engineer melanoma cells from normal primary melanocytes using CRISPR/Cas9 technology. This work will shed greater insight into how melanoma develops in patients. In the near future, John plans to pursue his studies in medicine with a strong emphasis on research.
