Giving bad news is a ubiquitous aspect of practicing medicine, and it is also one of the hardest skills that a doctor must master. For trainees, it can be an especially daunting task to do well. We have to juggle our insecurities about not having enough knowledge regarding the patient's illness, our emotional responses to the unfortunate situation, our natural avoidance of difficult conversations, and our inexperience with the task. While there's no substitute for experience, having a good framework and preparing a game plan can go a long way toward easing the anxiety. Please join our invited experts for a discussion on how to give bad news and share your thoughts on this challenging yet vital skill.
