Didn't you get the memo? The ACGME has just released revisions to its "Common Program Requirements" - Section VI in particular - that are probably going to affect your sleep-wake cycles. Starting in July, the workday cap for first-year residents will return to 24 hours "plus up to four hours to manage necessary care transitions." Other work hour limitations such as the maximum 80-hour work week, one guaranteed day off in every seven, and in-house call not more often than every third night, are left unchanged. We're inviting residents, experts, and residency directors into this discussion, so come prepared with your questions about how these new duty hours policies will affect you or your residents.
