Addressing Mental Health in Medical School and Residency

More than a quarter of medical students and residents are depressed, studies show - a notably higher rate than in the general population. There are still considerable barriers to frank discussions of mental wellness during training. Additionally, we don't have a clear understanding of what factors shape mental health and how we can improve it.

Join NEJM Resident 360 for a discussion about mental health in medical school and residency. We hope to address such questions as:

  • How do we recognize mental health issues in students?
  • What can we do to reduce the stigma around mental health challenges in training?
  • What aspects of the training environment affect mental health?
  • What are some effective strategies that programs have used to facilitate mental wellness?
  • What role can new technologies play?
