To Err is Human: Medical Error and Disclosure

You work hard every day to keep your patients safe. Your hospital may have patient safety initiatives to reduce the frequency and severity of errors. But mistakes happen, and they can happen to anyone at any stage of their training. A mistake could be a “near miss” or could lead to patient harm. Residents do not often feel prepared to handle mistakes - you may feel distressed and alone. Join a discussion on NEJM Resident360 to learn more about what to do in the case of medical error.

We hope to address some of the following questions:

  • How do you learn from a mistake and prevent errors in the future?
  • What is the literature and evidence on medical error and disclosure?
  • How do you learn more about your hospital’s policies on error disclosure
