Leonard Chiu is a medical student Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in Biology and minoring in Chemistry. Leonard has research experience in radiation oncology and medical oncology. He has authored prospective, retrospective, and meta-analysis studies on topics including quality of life in the cancer setting and the use of olanzapine for the treatment of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (https://goo.gl/WUHPGY).
Leonard is also passionate about public health and social impact. His time working with unemployed veterans in Philadelphia and tutoring students in the School District of Philadelphia opened his eyes to the many non-conventional factors that affect the employment and education landscape in disadvantaged communities. These experiences largely motivated him to pursue a master’s in nutrition to acquire a better understanding of the health behaviors that can promote healthy living, and to further the public understanding of systemic barriers through research and interventions.
Recently, Leonard has been working in the Cardiac Surgery Research Lab at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia University Medical Center to study the management of prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE). He hopes to one day become a physician who can amalgamate his interests in clinical medicine, epidemiological research, and public health.
